Stirling Lloyd Score Again at St. James Pk

Stirling Lloyd’s Decseal® system with its combination of high performance waterproofing membrane and high quality colour finishes has proved crucial in the development of a £2m multi-storey car park at Newcastle United Football Club’s St James’ Park home.

Thanks to the range of colours available from Stirling Lloyd, the Premiership club now has a club car park surfaced in its own club colours – black, white and blue, bringing it into line with the colour scheme featured in the club’s official crest and across the rest of the ground.

Working in conjunction with Newcastle City Council, Newcastle United has constructed the 1,100 space car park for use by supporters on match days, with the general public allowed access at all other times. The development forms part of a major programme, extending the facilities available at St James’ Park in line with the Premiership giant’s continued success on the pitch.

The colour scheme was important to the developers of the new car park. The club’s combination of black, white and blue is famous across the world and, thanks to Stirling Lloyd, they have been successfully incorporated into the scheme. Parking bays have been finished in blue, driving areas in black and the line markings in white.

While this surface colour was highly desirable from the Club’s point of view for the car park, other, more practical concerns also had to be addressed. In particular, the exposed decks of the car park required a waterproofing / wearing surfacing system that was durable and would provide long-term protection. The non-exposed areas needed to be treated with a system that would provide a safe and long-lasting driving surface.

In addition, as the work was scheduled to be carried out in the middle of a north-east winter, systems that could be applied even during harsh weather conditions were also crucial. With these requirements as the criteria for the systems to be used, the owners of the Car Park chose to use Stirling Lloyd’s Decseal® systems, and awarded the contract for the work to JB Concrete Protection Ltd, one of Stirling Lloyd’s Authorised Contractors for Decseal®.

Decseal® was the ideal solution for the challenge faced on the exposed decks. Based on Stirling Lloyd’s market-leading Eliminator waterproofing membrane, Decseal® is a dual function waterproofing and wearing course system specifically designed for use in multi-storey car parks. Combining a tough, flexible and seamless liquid applied waterproofing membrane with a fully compatible, decorative, skid resistant wearing course, Decseal® provides unsurpassed bond strength and durability.

Its fully compatible sister product, Safetrack® SC was used on the covered areas. This provides the same high performance wearing course as Decseal®, but does not incorporate the waterproofing membrane.

As expected, JB Concrete Protection had to apply the systems during changeable weather conditions, but the Decseal® range is based on MMA resins and so can be applied in the widest range of climatic conditions. These weather tolerant properties, together with the system’s rapid spray application and cure, even in the cold temperatures experienced, helped ensure the application was completed successfully with in the one month timescale that had been specified.

In total Decseal® was applied to 3,500m² of exposed deck, and Safetrack ® SC was applied to 2,000m² of covered deck.

Now into their second season at St. James Park the Stirling Lloyd systems continue to provide a high degree of protection to the Car Park as it sees its fair share of traffic - with the Magpies competing in an intensive Premiership programme and having qualified for the second phase of the Champions League.
