Aesthetic Skid Resistant Surfacing : Anderton Towpath
|

|
|
Stirling Lloyd's Safetrack® CT skid resistant coloured surfacing for Heritage applications has played an important part in the regeneration of one of Cheshire's most famous towpaths.

The British Waterway's maintained Anderton Towpath, which runs alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal, required refurbishment, as part of an ongoing programme of regeneration to encourage tourism in the area. This has already involved the restoration one of the area's most famous landmarks, the Anderton Boat Lift, and the opening of an Operations Centre.

British Waterways required a system which was not only aesthetic, hard-wearing and would provide the required degree of skid resistance but also which could be applied during the winter months when the refurbishment was due to commence.

Safetrack® CT which is a hand applied, rapid curing, pigmented screed, based on Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) resins, designed to provide visual delineation and a non-slip hardwearing surface more than met this criteria.

Colour stable, durable with excellent chemical resistance and providing a high bond strength to the substrate, Safetrack® CT has a proven track record of successful applications in the UK, including a previous contract for British Waterways, which involved the refurbishment of some 800m² of towpaths in Kidsgrove.

The contract to apply the 980m² of Safetrack® CT was awarded to Stirling Lloyd Contracts Ltd, one of a national network of authorised contractors for the installation of the system.

Safetrack® CT's tolerance of difficult site and climatic conditions as well as low temperatures ensured that despite experiencing temperatures below 5 °C the application process was unaffected, which would not have been the case if an epoxy system had been used due to their inability to cope with these conditions.

Furthermore, the use of an aesthetically pleasing Staffordshire Pink aggregate, specially selected by British Waterways ensured that the Towpath was refurbished in a manner that was in keeping with the surrounding, picturesque countryside.

With the regeneration of Anderton Towpath now complete, Stirling Lloyd have helped ensure that one of Cheshire's most popular tourist attractions remains a safe and pleasant place to visit.
