Manors Car Park, UK
Decseal and Safetrack products provide better whole life costing and long term protection
In service at Manors Multi Storey Car Park (MSCP) in Newcastle-upon-Tyne since 1989, the Decseal combined waterproofing and wearing course system and Safetrack HW high friction Surfacing system, have not only retained their appearance but continue to perform well, providing effective long term protection.
This is despite the six storey reinforced concrete structure being subject to a high level of traffic, being located as it is in a busy area of Newcastle, close to the city’s main shopping area and recently redeveloped Quayside.
Newcastle City Councdil
Stirling Lloyd Construction Ltd
Stirling Lloyd first became involved with the Car Park when they were approached by the car park’s owners, Newcastle City Council, who, prompted by some minor concrete deterioration on Level 1 of the car park were looking to carry out a programme of preventative maintenance.
Well aware that any future, unexpected refurbishment of the car park would not only be costly but could also cause a lengthy closure, inconvenience to patrons and a considerable loss of revenue, and following consultation with Stirling Lloyd, the Council decided to use three of Stirling Lloyd’s advanced resin based products, namely; Metaset, Decseal and Safetrack HW, to repair the damage and protect the structure from future deterioration.
Areas Of Use
Firstly the Metaset rapid curing repair mortar was used to repair the damaged concrete decks prior to the application of the subsequent coating system. Then the durable, flexible and seamless Decseal system was applied to the exposed top deck, providing both waterproofing and a hard wearing surface.
Safetrack HW skid resistant surfacing system was applied to the intermediate decks and ramps, with a heavier duty aggregate being incorporated on the ramps between levels to provide a higher degree of skid resistance.
The use of these systems offered the advantage that should wear eventually occur necessitating localised repair or maintenance, the repair material achieves an intimate chemical bond with the original application irrespective of the time elapsed between the two operations.
This feature facilitates easy, effective repairs, with no compromise of the bond, either to the substrate or within the system.
These systems speed and ease of application together with their rapid cure meant that some 20,000m of the two systems were applied to the six levels of the car park by Authorised Contractors, Stirling Lloyd Contracts Limited, well within the specified seven week project timescale.
Long Term Effective Protection
Recent inspections of the car park have shown that despite the continual high traffic levels creating the potential for wear and tear as well as exposure to rain water, highly corrosive salt deposits from winter gritting operations on the local roads, exhaust fumes and high shear forces from braking, the Safetrack HW and Decseal systems remain well bonded to the deck and are performing extremely well.
Not only have Stirling Lloyd’s deck coating systems performed well since 1989, but they remain in good condition, ensuring many more years of effective service.
Having been thoroughly tried and tested over such a long period, Newcastle City Council have elected to use Stirling Lloyd’s car park systems on several other car parks, effective repairs, with no compromise of the bond, either to the substrate or within the system.
Stirling Lloyd’s deck coating systems have performed well since the date of its installation back in 1989 and still remain in good condition. Thanks to the robustness and durability of Stirling Lloyd’s products, Manors MSCP has enjoyed rewards of better whole life costing and minimal disruption to patrons. Such was the success of the project, Newcastle City Council elected to use Stirling Lloyd’s systems on several other car parks.
