Steel orthotropic deck replacement for Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
The Verrazano-Narrows, is a double-decked suspension bridge stretching 7,176m across the Narrows in New York, connecting Staten Island with Brooklyn.
Analysis undertaken in 2008 recorded 190,000 vehicles passing over the bridge every day, making it a critical, yet busy route on the East Coast. Due to such high volumes of traffic, the 50 year old deck required replacing. It was replaced with a lighter weight, more durable steel orthotropic deck and included the addition of a seventh lane, for bus and high occupancy vehicles (HOV).
The waterproofing of the deck required a solution that could withstand extreme temperatures and extreme weather conditions. Eliminators proven track record and ability to bond to both the asphalt and bridge deck proved to be key attributes for specification. Eliminator bridge deck waterproofing will offer long term protection for the bridge and provide the peace of mind the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority were seeking.
